What Is AI Governance Maturity?
Understand what AI governance maturity means, why it matters, and how organisations can move from informal AI use to structured governance.
AI governance maturity describes how effectively an organisation governs the use of artificial intelligence — not whether a policy document exists, but whether arrangements are defined, used, evidenced and improving.
Why it matters
Organisations can have an AI policy that nobody uses, a risk register that does not reflect real use cases, or a committee that lacks reliable information. Maturity looks at practice: visibility of use, ownership, controls, evidence and improvement over time.
Common signs of immature governance
- AI tools are used informally with limited visibility
- Ownership of AI risk is unclear
- Acceptable use is undefined or unpublished
- Vendors and third-party tools are not reviewed consistently
- Leaders cannot evidence oversight
What more mature governance looks like
Use cases are inventoried and classified. Roles and decision rights are documented. Risks are assessed before use. Vendors are diligence-checked. Staff have guidance. Incidents can be escalated. Progress is reviewed.
